Gallbladder

Gallbladder surgery is the most frequent procedure that most general surgeons perform. The most common reason that patients are referred to a surgeon regarding their gallbladder is because they have gallstones.

Hiatal hernia and GERD

GERD is very common, as evidenced by the numerous commercials on television promoting various antacids for the treatment of GERD symptoms. It is important to point out up front that these medications (Pepcid, Zantac, Prilosec, Nexium, Protonix, etc) treat the symptoms of reflux, namely heartburn. These medications do not actually stop reflux. They merely make the material that is refluxing less acidic, and thus, in most cases, less symptomatic. GERD is a plumbing problem.

Inguinal (groin) hernia


Inguinal hernias are common, especially in men, but can also occur in females. An inguinal hernia is a hernia of the groin. In men it is a natural weak spot as this is where the spermatic cord (structures going to the testicle) goes through the abdominal wall. It travels through the inguinal canal, which is the space between the layers of the abdominal wall that have offset openings. A hernia happens here when these tissues weaken and the openings get dilated.

Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are perhaps the most common, least talked about problem, as for obvious reasons most people are uneasy talking about their ano-rectal issues. But take solace in the myriad of over the counter hemorrhoid remedies, which while most are ineffectual, at least it tells you that you are not alone.
